Monkey Bay village:
A backpackers lodge that is intergrated with the local village structures. There are many unique details constructed from vernacular materials.
Mpale village:
This is another homestead that has a fence enclosing the yard. This home is raised high on a platform with a porch wrapping all around the structure. The orange color is the natural color of the soil and the black color is from the inside of battery cells..
Kalole village:
This man is constructing the roof structure which the 3 main beams are gum poles and the rest of the poles are bamboo. The ties are both vines and tire straps. The kitchen was constructed of reeds covered with mud.
Monkey Bay village:
This is a backpackers lodge that is intergrated with a village situated on a beach. Like most lodges, this is a very solid structure with a thick thatched roof and large gum poles used to support the roof .
Chipile village:
This homestead had an enclosed yard and the front of the house was open to the public. Decorations were a painted black ban 1 meter high and little black bumps at the corners and where the door is. Permission wqas never asked to photograph inside of one's home but it was offered here. The interior pictures clearly shows the layer of plastic..
Chakwela village:
This structure was being constructed with burnt bricks and has a small front porch. The roof structure is bamboo because that is what is available in the area. The short ridge beam is needed due to the shape of the house and the it supported by vertical memebers resting on a cross member being supported by the walls.
Roof poles are supported by bamboo beam resting on bricks with space inbetween.
Narrow verandah wraps around the entire house and is raised high off the ground.
Kitchen is raised on platform and has no walls. It is inside the fenced courtyard.

The homstead is enclosed with a thatched fence.
Deep verandah is on all four sides of the home. A black band at the base with little bumps at the corners.

This roof has three main poles for support with bamboo poles resting on them.
These are the tire strips that many peolpe use to tie together poles on roof structures.
Kitchen which is plastered on the outside but not plastered inside.
